Global Day of Action on Military Spending: Halifax Votes!

GLOBAL DAY OF ACTION ON MILITARY SPENDING (GDAMS)
Held annually in April, NSVOW joined thousands of people around the world in calling for reallocation of Military budgets to social and humanities needs.
The local event was held outside the Central Library and provided the public with an opportunity to choose where they  want their tax dollars spent by placing a provided quarter in the jar of their  choice.  Here’s how people voted:
Health & education:     31%
Environment                 24%
Women & Children      18%
Peace                              13%
Arts & Culture               11%
Military                           3%

Since 1997, the Canadian military budget has climbed from $8 billion to $23 billion. The federal government spends more on DND than any other department. (See Public Accounts graph below.)

Sustain Her – PeacemakeHers to UN Commission on the Status of Women

               Stories from the 2015 PeacemakeHers Campers 

Six inspiring young members of NS Voice of Women for Peace plan to attend the first week of the United Nation’s 60th Commission on the Status of Women [CSW60] in New York, March 13 – 24 as delegates with Canadian Voice of Women for Peace.

The CSW60 2016 Priority Theme is Women’s empowerment and its linkto sustainable development.

Excitement is building. Camper Erica Fraser says:

Connecting with other women and fem-friendly folk holds so much potential for catalyzing positive change on our planet. For this upcoming gathering at the UN, I’m most excited about learning from people who are working to build healthy communities in creative and effective ways, hoping to harness some of that energy and bringing it home to Nova Scotia.

The PeaceMakeHers Leadership Camp for Young Women, held annually at Thinkers Lodge in Pugwash, is an initiative of the Nova Scotia Voice of Women for Peace. Campers have the opportunity to receive a small bursary towards education about and experiences of peacemakers at a global level.

Meghan Doucette, who plans to attend PeacemakeHers 2016, says:

I am excited to delve into the themes of women’s empowerment and sustainable development at CSW60 in a few short weeks. This will be an amazing opportunity to meet other women who are focusing on these issues all around the world.

Funds raised at Sustain Her will assist with travel and accommodation costs for these peacemakers of the future.

NS VOW Delegation to UN Commission on the Status of Women

Eight NS VOW members of all ages are planning to attend the 60th Session of the United Nations Commission of the Status of Women in New York in March.
They work in different fields – journalism, academia, community engagement, and students – and are all passionate about creating a world where women have equitable opportunities to their male counterparts.
Their goals in attending CSW60:

*Learn from workshops hosted by NGOs from around the world
*Bring their knowledge back to their communities in Halifax
*Take action to create a more equitable future for women and all marginalized communities

Sustain Her – music and silent auction

Join us Saturday March 5, from 6:00 – 8:30 pm for an evening of music, light snacks and a Silent Auction. Hear presentations from NS PeacemakeHers Camp participants and enjoy a performance by Sandy Greenberg, who will share her peace and feminist songs.

Where: Veith House — 3115 Veith Street, Halifax, NS

Suggested donation – $10 or pay what you can, at the door – let us know if you’re coming if you can! Funds raised from this event will support participants attending the 40th anniversary of the UN Commission on the Status o Women in New York this March, with a portion of the funds raised also to be donated to Veith House and NS Voice of Women for Peace.

White Poppies for Peace during the 16 Days of Activism Against Gender-Based Violence Campaign,November 26 – December 10, 2015
NSVOW’s White Poppies for Peace will be made and distributed at various events during the 16 days.
White Poppies 2015-2
